Oral Surgery in Aloha & Hillsboro, and Forest Grove

At Smith Dental, we’ll do everything we can to preserve your natural teeth. Unfortunately, it does sometimes become clear that saving your teeth would do more harm than good, and in that case, you’ll be happy to know that we are skilled when it comes to dental extractions, even more complex extractions like impacted wisdom teeth.

Dental ExtractionsTooth Ache | Extractions & Oral Surgery | Smith Dental

We are able to perform simple and surgical extractions. Simple extractions are performed when the tooth is completely exposed and needs to come out. Surgical extractions are done when the tooth is partially or completely covered by gum (impacted).

Surgical extractions do take longer to heal than simple extractions, but we will provide you with advice and medications to make your recovery more comfortable.

Some of the reasons we may need to perform an extraction include:

  • Wisdom teeth or other teeth are impacted, which can lead to pain and infection
  • Tooth decay has advanced to a point where the tooth cannot be saved
  • A tooth has been broken and cannot be repaired
  • Baby teeth have remained in place for too long and are creating difficulties for erupting permanent teeth
  • Orthodontic care is needed and removing one or more teeth will improve the results

Oral Surgery Procedures

In addition to tooth extraction, other conditions that may require oral surgery include:

  • Temporomandibular joint disorder
  • Severe jaw misalignment
  • Trauma or serious injury to the teeth or jaw
  • Asymmetrical jaw positioning

We can also place the posts for dental implants, a method of replacing missing teeth with aesthetic and functional lookalikes.

Self-Care and Recovery Following Oral Surgery

For many people, the worry surrounding an extraction or other surgical procedure is not the procedure itself, but the period following the procedure, after the anesthesia wears off.

At Smith Dental, your comfort is extremely important to us, and we’ll do whatever we can to make sure that your recovery is as fast and easy as possible. We’ll provide detailed and thorough after-care instructions so that you know exactly what you need to do in the hours and days that follow, and if necessary, we’ll prescribe medication that will reduce swelling and discomfort and help you avoid the possibility of infection.

The length of time it takes for your recovery will vary widely depending on the procedure you had done, and we will discuss this with you at your consultation appointment. We will always take the time to make sure that you fully understand the process of your procedure and the reason for its necessity.

Some self-care basics following extraction and oral surgery:

  • Follow our instructions.
  • Take your prescriptions as directed.
  • Do not drink through a straw unless we give you the go-ahead. The sucking action can cause clots to come loose and increase bleeding.
  • Keep soft, cool foods around so that you can eat comfortably without disturbing the treated area. Good foods to eat following an extraction or oral surgery include smoothies, yogurt, pudding, ice cream, popsicles, and shakes.
  • If you ever have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and give us a call!
