What Is a Cavity?
A cavity is a hole in the structure of your tooth that forms because of erosion caused by the acids that the bacteria in your mouth release. Left untreated, the cavity can grow and spread and develop into a serious decay problem that requires more extensive treatment including root canals, crowns, and even extraction. By visiting our office regularly for examinations, we can catch any cavities that develop when they are small and easily treatable.
How Can Cavities Be Prevented?
You can significantly reduce your risk of developing cavities by practicing good hygiene habits. Drs. John and Ryan Smith along with our excellent dental hygienists will work with you to create a self-care routine that you will be able to commit to.
The bacteria that produce the acid that leads to cavities thrive in the plaque that accumulates on your teeth. Regularly removing this plaque will keep the bacteria off of the surface of your teeth. Flossing removes the plaque from between your teeth and just beneath the gum line, preventing cavities below the gumline as well as gum disease.
Even with fantastic brushing habits, it is nearly impossible to remove every last bit of plaque from your teeth consistently (although it will still make a huge difference). Your teeth have countless nooks and crannies where plaque can hide, and in time, that plaque will harden into tartar, which can’t be removed with a toothbrush and floss.
Visiting our office twice each year for professional cleanings with our hygienists will give you a fresh start each time and help prevent cavities.
Other ways that you can prevent cavities include:
- Eating calcium-rich foods that strengthen your bones (including your teeth)
- Avoiding sugary foods and drinks or brushing as soon as possible after eating them
- Using products that contain fluoride such as toothpaste and mouthwash
If you are prone to cavities, we can also discuss preventive options like sealants to help protect your teeth.
We can use either amalgam or composite resin to fill your teeth. Both are effective methods of filling cavities, and both have advantages and drawbacks. Composite resin fillings are the most aesthetic choice since they blend right in with the enamel of your teeth. Unfortunately, they are more expensive than amalgam fillings, and some dental insurance plans won’t pay for the extra cost. We will discuss your options with you and help you decide which fillings are right for you.
To place your fillings, we will need to remove a small portion of your tooth to make sure that the decay won’t spread underneath the filling. Don’t worry – we’ll make sure that you are numb before we begin this procedure so you won’t fill a thing.
The filling will then be placed into the small hole to seal the cavity. Once this part is complete, your tooth will be restored to full functionality, and you can get on with the rest of your day. You may experience some sensitivity afterward, but it will quickly fade.
