Finding the right dentist is important and can be challenging, especially when you have children to think about. Working with a dentist who can build rapport with all of your family members is more convenient, but how do you know who you can trust?

  • Stop by for a tour. Talk with staff members and ask if you can have a tour of your prospective dental office. Notice if it's clean, updated, and modern. Are they using advanced dental technology? Does it seem welcoming for children?
  • Schedule a consultation. This is a great time to talk with your prospective dentist about their treatment philosophies, especially if you need treatment or want to make changes to your smile's appearance.
  • Read online reviews. Reviews are sometimes a great way to see what patients are saying about your prospective dental office.

Whitening your teeth is one of the quickest and most affordable ways to enhance your smile. If you are considering brightening your smile with teeth whitening in Hillsboro, you will be happy to hear that the procedure is completely safe for your smile. The main ingredient in most bleaching gels is hydrogen peroxide, which is safe for tooth enamel and achieves effective results.

Choosing to whiten your teeth with your dentist in Aloha also helps keep your teeth safe because we make custom plastic teeth whitening trays at Smith Dental. Custom-fit trays protect your gums and soft tissues from any gel that might escape and cause tooth sensitivity. You won't be able to find custom-fitting bleaching trays at your local grocery store since we take impressions of your teeth to make them.  Better yet, you'll always have your custom trays available whenever you'd like to brighten your smile.

Teeth Whitening and Tooth Sensitivity

It is also a good idea to work with your dentist for teeth whitening if you encounter any tooth sensitivity. Your dentist can suggest fluoride rinses or treatments that may help reduce your discomfort after teeth whitening.

Braces for Adults

Invisalign is an innovative system that comfortably moves your teeth back into their proper alignment. It does not use brackets and wires like traditional braces. The clear aligners that move your teeth are clear and practically invisible, meaning you can enjoy a professional appearance while you straighten your teeth.

If you're not satisfied with the appearance of your teeth, there are excellent solutions for creating the smile you want. Surprisingly, porcelain veneers and dental bonding can actually correct many of the same issues, such as:Woman Smiling | Cosmetic dentist in Hillsboro OR

  • Spacing between teeth
  • Chipping, fractures, or excessive wear
  • Shape or size discrepancies
  • Stains or discoloration

Where Veneers and Bonding Differ

The difference between veneers and bonding is that veneers cover your tooth structure, allowing you to change the shade, size, and shape of your teeth and giving your smile a more symmetrical and harmonious appearance. Bonding, on the other hand, utilizes composite resin that is added to your tooth to eliminate imperfections, custom shaded and polished to blend flawlessly with your smile.

Porcelain veneers are a permanent solution since they require your dentist to remove a small amount of tooth enamel for proper placement. It takes around two weeks and two appointments with your cosmetic dentist in Hillsboro to complete your new smile with porcelain veneers, while dental bonding can typically be completed during one visit. Bonding also tends to be less expensive than porcelain veneers.

Crowns and Bridges

Different from a tooth filling, which is designed to restore a small area of your tooth, a dental crown replaces your whole tooth. It is made of ceramic porcelain, which reflects light in the same way a natural tooth does to blend seamlessly with your smile. A crown also takes the same shape as your tooth so your bite functions properly and you're able to eat and chew with ease.

Dental Crowns in Aloha ORDr. Smith may recommend a dental crown for these situations:

  • For a tooth that is decayed, broken, or damaged beyond what a filling can repair
  • To strengthen a tooth after a root canal
  • For a tooth that is cracked or broken
  • To restore a dental implant in a single tooth replacement

It typically takes two dental visits and about two weeks to complete a dental crown. Dr. Smith will make a temporary crown and prepare your tooth for its new restoration during your first visit. It then takes about two weeks to craft your new tooth at a dental laboratory. Once your new crown is ready, you'll return to Smith Dental to have it placed and adjusted.

If you have any questions about dental crowns in Aloha, or you need to schedule your appointment, contact Smith Dental at (503) 575-1337 today.

Dental Bonding & Fillings

During your examinations and cleanings, we'll be checking your teeth for cavities. Depending on the size of the cavity, we may be able to see it during our visual inspection of your teeth. If the cavity is still fairly small, we'll be able to spot it on your x-rays.

While amalgam fillings are an effective method of stopping cavities, newer composite resins do have some distinct advantages.

Advantages of Composite Resin Fillings:

  • The color of the filling blends in perfectly with your natural tooth color.
  • The resin bonds to your tooth from the inside, giving the tooth additional support.
  • Resin fillings require less removal of natural tooth structure.
  • Resin fillings are 100% mercury free.
  • In addition to filling cavities, composite resin can be used to make other repairs to the teeth such as fixing chips.

Invisalign is an innovative and popular orthodontic alternative to traditional metal braces. Custom-made to fit your unique smile, Invisalign clear aligners are smooth, comfortable, and discreet.

How It Works

Invisalign clear aligners use BPA-free, fabricated trays that fit over the teeth and align them into the desired position. Over the course of treatment, patients receive several sets of aligner trays, each set snugger than the last. Each set gradually moves the teeth into a straighter, more symmetrical position without the need for tightening and readjusting wires.

They also work much faster than traditional braces so that you can achieve a straighter, healthier smile in a matter of months. Depending on your specific case and smile goals, Drs. Ryan and John Smith will determine the length of treatment and how you should wear your aligners for optimum results.

We recommend patients wear their aligners between 20 and 22 hours each day for the best and fastest results. Invisalign treatment usually takes between 12 and 18 months to complete. However, patients often see results in a matter of a few months!

Our team of dental professionals serves the Hillsboro, Aloha, Forest Grove, and surrounding communities with comprehensive oral health care.

Your treatment with Invisalign will progress efficiently and as planned when you make an effort to wear your aligners as much as possible. At least 22 hours each day is ideal and will help you achieve your smile goals.

One of the fantastic benefits of invisible braces with Invisalign is that you can remove your aligners as needed for eating, brushing, and flossing. Busy adults love that they can also remove their aligners if they have an important meeting or event to attend. The critical thing is to be compliant and wear your aligners as much as possible outside of these events.

The more you regularly wear your aligners, the quicker your teeth will move, and your treatment plan will progress.

Root Canals

When we recommend root canal treatment in Aloha, it is likely because a tooth is abscessed or infected. When decay reaches the nerve of your tooth, it causes a painful infection, and root canal treatment is needed to remove the diseased tissue from inside your tooth. This procedure eliminates your tooth infection and also preserves your natural tooth structure, which is always preferable over losing a tooth.

If you don't get root canal treatment to restore your infected tooth, it becomes so damaged that we have to remove it in order to eliminate your infection. You also run the risk that your infection can spread to neighboring teeth and even move to other critical areas of your body, such as your brain, where it can become a life-threatening situation.

Contact Our Aloha Dental Clinic

Root canal treatment not only relieves your infection, but it also eliminates the severe pain that a tooth infection causes. It is crucial in order for you to protect your health not to delay treating a tooth that is infected. If you are experiencing dental pain or a constant toothache that doesn't go away, we encourage you to contact your Aloha dental team right away for prompt emergency dental care.

This important therapy is performed when the root canal that is a part of the structure of your tooth becomes infected oMale Root Canal Patient | Smith Dental Root Canal FAQr damaged.

Reasons You Might Need a Root Canal

  • Trauma has caused your tooth to fracture.
  • A cavity has progressed too far and decay has reached the root canal or nerve of your tooth.
  • You have an abscess, a serious infection of the tooth and gum.
  • Decay has started again under an old metal filling.
  • A previous injury has damaged the pulp or the nerve of your tooth.

Often, pain is a reliable signal that root canal therapy is needed, but if the nerve is dead, you might not feel pain even though we can see the need for a root canal on an x-ray.

If we believe that you need a root canal, we'll discuss this with you and present you with all of your options.

Root Canal Hillsboro Or We will do our very best to make your root canal comfortable. You'll be numb while we are performing the actual procedure and won't feel anything. You may have some discomfort following your root canal, after the anesthesia wears off, but once your immune system recognizes that the danger has passed, this discomfort will fade.

Before Your Root Canal

Before your procedure, we will discuss how to manage your discomfort and stay comfortable. If necessary, we can also prescribe medication to help.

Sleep Apnea Treatment

Your dentist in Hillsboro has experience treating sleep apnea. And we may be able to help you!

Often, patients are prescribed a CPAP machine after diagnosis; however, as many as half of all patients cannot tolerate CPAP therapy.

CPAP is a machine with a mask that delivers continuous air throughout the night.woman unable to sleep due to partner snoring

Fortunately, in some cases, sleep apnea can be treated using an oral appliance that you wear in your mouth while you sleep.

The appliance holds your lower jaw slightly forward, preventing it from falling back and blocking your airway. The appliance is created specifically for you from impressions of your teeth to fit your mouth perfectly.

Your Forest Grove dentist can evaluate your level of sleep apnea to determine whether appliance therapy is right for you.

Left untreated, sleep apnea can have serious consequences and has been linked to high blood pressure and even stroke.

If you snore or have sleep apnea (or suspect you might) and can't tolerate therapy using CPAP, give us a call today to arrange a sleep appliance evaluation.

We have dental offices in Foxboro, Forest Grove, and Aloha. And we are happy to see patients from all locations.

Teeth Cleanings & Exams

For most of our patients, professional teeth cleanings should happen about every six months. In some cases, you may need cleanings more often, and if we believe that you need more frequent cleanings, we'll discuss this with you.
