When is a dental crown recommended?
Different from a tooth filling, which is designed to restore a small area of your tooth, a dental crown replaces your whole tooth. It is made of ceramic porcelain, which reflects light in the same way a natural tooth does to blend seamlessly with your smile. A crown also takes the same shape as your tooth so your bite functions properly and you're able to eat and chew with ease.
Dr. Smith may recommend a dental crown for these situations:
- For a tooth that is decayed, broken, or damaged beyond what a filling can repair
- To strengthen a tooth after a root canal
- For a tooth that is cracked or broken
- To restore a dental implant in a single tooth replacement
It typically takes two dental visits and about two weeks to complete a dental crown. Dr. Smith will make a temporary crown and prepare your tooth for its new restoration during your first visit. It then takes about two weeks to craft your new tooth at a dental laboratory. Once your new crown is ready, you'll return to Smith Dental to have it placed and adjusted.
