Should I Get Dental Veneers?

Everyone wants a bright, even smile, but unfortunately, not everyone was born with one. Even if you were lucky enough to be born with perfect teeth, over time, teeth can get stained, chipped, or just become shortened through excessive wear.

If your smile isn't all you wish, veneers are a possible solution to your less than perfect smile. Veneers can be used to correct a variety of cosmetic problems including discolored teeth; worn down, chipped or broken teeth; misaligned or unevenly shaped teeth; and gaps between the teeth. What Are Veneers?

Dental veneers are very thin shells that are custom fitted just for you and bonded to the front of your teeth for an instant improvement in the appearance of your smile. They can change the shape, size, and color of your teeth to correct many cosmetic issues in just a few dental visits.

Veneers can be made of porcelain or resin, and both have their advantages. Porcelain veneers are more stain-resistant and reflect light in a similar way to natural teeth, but resin veneers are thinner, which means less natural tooth needs to be removed to fit the veneers. Dr. Smith, your Hillsboro, OR dentist, will help you make the choice that is best for you and your mouth.

How Do I Get Veneers?

The veneers treatment process usually takes three visits. During your initial consultation, Dr. Smith will discuss your options and determine if you are a good candidate for veneers. He can answer any questions you have during this appointment, take X-rays, and possibly make impressions of your teeth in preparation for the veneers.

During the second visit, we will take impressions if we don't already have them, and your teeth will be prepped for the veneers. This requires removal of a thin layer of enamel from the front of your teeth, to ensure the veneers fit properly and look natural rather than bulky or uneven. The impressions will be used to craft the veneers, a process which usually takes one to two weeks.

At your final appointment we will check the veneers to make sure they fit your teeth and make adjustments if needed. Your teeth will be cleaned, polished, and then etched, which creates a rough surface that helps the veneers bond more securely to your teeth. The veneers are bonded into place and cured, any excess cement is removed, and the fit is checked and adjusted one final time. Once you and Dr. Smith are satisfied with the results, you leave with a bright, beautiful smile!

Do Veneers Require Special Care?

No! Once the veneers are in place, you will care for them just like your natural teeth, with regular brushing and flossing. Veneers are stain resistant (though coffee, wine, and tobacco can still eventually stain them) and will last five to ten years with proper oral care.

If you plan to have your teeth whitened, make sure to do it before getting veneers, as they will not bleach like natural teeth. To help prolong the life of your veneers, we recommend you avoid chewing on hard foods and non-food objects such as ice, jawbreakers, pencils, or pens. Excessive pressure can occasionally cause a veneer to dislodge and pop off.
