Teeth CleaningSome people ask, “If I am really good about cleaning my teeth at home, why do I need to get them cleaned at a dentist office?”  While cleaning your teeth at home is important, it is only a small part of maintaining your oral health.  A dentist or dental hygienist has specialized tools to help remove plaque and buildup that a toothbrush and floss cannot remove.  They are able to reach areas that are not possible with just a brush.  If you have chosen Smith Dental as your preferred Hillsboro Dentist, we will do gum measurements each time you visit to catch early signs of periodontal disease.  If these signs are found early on, treatment is much more successful at restoring the health of your gums.

What Is A Teeth Cleaning?

It is a professional procedure where a variety of tools are used to remove plaque, buildup and stains from your teeth.  This is done with instruments called scalers.  Once the teeth are found free of any buildup or calculus, they are polished with a polishing cup.  It is designed to leave the tooth surface smooth and buildup free to make it easier for you to maintain clean teeth at home and prevent gum disease.

Why Do My Gums Bleed?

If you notice that your gums bleed, it is a sign of inflammation generally caused by buildup of bacteria.  This can cause increased sensitivity, irritation and pain.  It is important to discuss these problem areas with our excellent hygienists at Smith Dental so you can reverse these symptoms.  If these symptoms are not addressed, over time it can cause bone loss and potential tooth loss.

How Many Times Per Year Should I Get My Teeth Cleaned?

For well maintained, healthy teeth it is recommended that you visit your dentist every 6 months.  If your gums are in need of more attention, it is possible you will need to come as often as every 3 months.  At these visits your cleanings will be performed, appropriate x-rays are taken and an exam by the dentist is completed.  The health of your teeth and gums will be assessed and any necessary treatment / preventative options will be discussed as well.
