3 Tips for Building Strong Dental Hygiene Habits in Your Kids
When looking for a children’s dentist in Aloha, finding someone that will guide you through the stages of your child’s oral health are important. We work with a number of parents who want to motivate their kids to look after their teeth and gums, but children can resist anything that doesn’t capture their ever-changing attention spans.
Here are some tips to help you help your child to brush and floss properly. Of course, it is essential to remember that they will need you to “check their work” until about age eight or nine when their fine motor skills develop enough to get the job done on their own.
#1 Have Fun Brushing Together
Kids love spending quality time with parents, and as parents ourselves, we understand that there is no other place that you would rather be. Steal a little “quality time” together at the beginning and end of each day to hang out in the bathroom cleaning those precious small pearly whites.
#2 Set a Good Example
Don’t skip your own oral health regimen. Setting a good example is, well, just that – a good example!
Create a Reward System
Ok, so motivating kids is a battle sometimes; however, kids love prizes! Create a chart and a small (non-sugar food) reward for their efforts. Earning a small toy or a day doing their favorite activity will help you help your child to brush and floss when recommended.
#3 Set a Timer
Check out YouTube or Vimeo for two-minute long videos to help motivate kids to brush for the full recommended time. Better yet, combine your time together with a bathroom dance party combining time together with building a positive oral health routine.
We love kids, and we have quite a bit of experience helping parents make sure those little ones can maintain a healthy smile for a lifetime. For a fun and experienced children’s dentist in Aloha, give us a call. Let’s work together with your child in mind.
