Sedation DentistryDental fear and anxiety are common and can be severe. Sometimes, they can even keep you from getting necessary dental care. But a trip to the dentist doesn't have to be scary! At Smith Dental, your Hillsboro dentist, we have a solution to dental anxiety – sedation dentistry!

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is a way to calm and relax you in the dentist's chair. Our office has two options to relax you and make your dental experience more pleasant.

Oral conscious sedation is the most common sedation dentistry option. We provide you with a prescription for a mild sedative, which you can take before your appointment, leaving you conscious but extremely relaxed. Most people find sedation dentistry is easy and stress-free. You will feel calm and at ease, and many people report they don't remember the details of their dental procedure. Oral conscious sedation usually lasts for several hours, so you will need someone to drive you to your appointment, and you should probably take the day off of work.

We also offer nitrous oxide gas in our office, which can be used alone for mild anxiety or combined with oral conscious sedation for more extreme cases of dental fear. The nitrous oxide gas, or "laughing gas," will make you feel relaxed and giddy. It's not called laughing gas for nothing – you may feel giggly or like you are floating. The advantage of nitrous oxide as a treatment is the effects are short-term: Once we remove the mask, it will wear off quickly, allowing you to drive to and from your appointment unassisted.

Will I Be Unconscious While Sedated?

No! Our office practices conscious sedation methods only. With these methods, you will be relaxed but still awake and able to respond to the dentist, ask questions, or let us know if you are uncomfortable or in pain. Sedation dentistry is meant to ease your anxiety and tension, not knock you out.

The effects of the sedative may make your memories of your time in the chair fuzzy, but you will be awake for the duration of your appointment. Oral conscious Sedation Dentistrysedation can also make your time in the dentist's chair seem to fly by, which makes it perfect for longer procedures or multiple procedures in one visit.
